What is Trinity Student Managed Fund?
Trinity Student Managed Fund was founded in November 2010 and is the first and only student managed fund in Europe.
The primary goal of the fund to create an unparalleled and self-sustaining educational resource for the educational development of future Trinity graduates, bestowing upon them experience in business analysis, investment and risk management.
Operating a real-life financial portfolio under the guidance of industry experts and past executives, Trinity SMF is a non-remunerated organisation managed by students, with a secondary mandate to invest in our community through donating a proportion of profits to some of the many worthwhile endeavours undertaken by Trinity College charities.
What does Trinity SMF do?
Trinity SMF operates a single portfolio of long only equity securities through an account held with Davy Stockbrokers.
The day-to-day operation of the Fund is carried out entirely by TCD students, under the guidance of an Advisory Board made up of industry professionals, academics and former Trinity SMF executives.
The funds with which Trinity SMF invests are provided by a range of sources, but primarily from corporate partners who donate on an annual basis and TCD alumni grants.
Aside from the main investing activities of the Fund, Trinity SMF run various careers events and provides students with the opportunity to gain practical experience in areas such as PR, event management, IT management and accounting.
How does the fund operate?
The Investments side of the Fund is split into 10 sector teams (Basic Materials, Consumer Discretionary, Consumer Staples, Energy, Utilities, Financials, Healthcare, Industrials, IT, Telecoms) plus a Macroeconomic team. Each team has a group of Analysts and a Sector Manger, who together provide the fund with coverage for the entire sector.
The Investment committee, made up of the CEO, CIO, CRO, Chief of Macro and Deputy CIO, is responsible for managing the investment portfolio and consults sector teams on decisions relating to their sector.
Each week, the Sector Managers and Portfolio Team meet to discuss market movements and to propose pitches which have come from the work of the individual sector teams.
There is also an Executive Committee, consisting of the CEO, CIO, COO, CRO, CFO, Chief of Macro and Chief of Staff, which meets weekly and is responsible for the Fund’s operations and strategic direction.
The Fund aims to operate with a flat hierarchy, whereby any SMF member with the right expertise for the task, regardless of the position, will be utilised for the ultimate benefit of the Fund.
