The Davy Pitch of the Year competition ran annually through the Trinity Student Managed Fund provides Junior and Senior Freshmen members with an invaluable opportunity to pitch in a competitive environment. Buy or sell pitches take place over a period of 2-3 months, with the final being held some time in March. The final of the competition will be judged by a panel of Davy employees headed by Aidan Donnelly, a member of the SMF Advisory Board and Head of Equities for Davy Private Clients.

This opportunity is exclusive to the Trinity SMF and the finalists are given the opportunity to interview in Davy’s offices for a paid summer internship in their Private Clients division. This experience has helped members progress to higher roles within the fund due to the wealth of knowledge gained from pitching extensively in a competitive environment. Participating members can further expand their knowledge on equity valuations, macroeconomic positioning, investment thesis construction, and risk analysis while growing within the SMF and potentially Davy.

Four years ago as part of our ongoing support of the Trinity Student Managed Fund, we at Davy decided to launch a summer intern programme for members of the fund. In order to optimise the outcome of this programme for participants, we took the decision to restrict applications to students in their first and second years of studies. We believed that a summer internship with us would provide an excellent starting point for students on their career journey. In our opinion one of the key skills that everyone should garner from their time with the Student Managed Fund is the ability to present an investment idea to any audience. With this in mind, we have organised the selection process for our internship around a stock pitching competition. It teaches a student to research a company, formulate an investment rationale, and present their recommendation to a panel of judges. While there can only be one winner in the competition, we believe everyone that participates gets a practical insight into how the real world of investment management works while building the confidence to make a presentation in public – a skill that will remain with them through their careers. Since the beginning of the programme Davy have benefitted from having four eager and clever interns working with us for the summer period and we believe we have assisted them on the early stepping stones of their future. We look forward to continuing this programme for many years to come.

The competition’s structure allowed me to gain constructive detailed feedback from the judges after each round giving me the opportunity to perfect my pitch before the final. The internship itself allowed me to gain an excellent knowledge of buyside equity analysis while working under one of Ireland’s top equity portfolio managers

The Davy Pitch of the Year competition allowed me to practice my pitching skills in a supportive and rewarding environment. Having won the competition, I interviewed in Davy and was offered a 4-month summer internship on the Investment Strategy team within the Private Client division. This has helped me develop a wealth of knowledge that I can bring back to the SMF as manager of the Transport and Industrials Sector
